[Tanaka finally got a RBI double at the 1st with a runner on third
 to tie with Hatsushiba and Ichiro, but he couldn't get any more
 RBI.  As a result, three players will share the title of the RBI
 king with 80 RBI(FYI, the only other possible player who can tie
 or go ahead is Stevens of the Buffaloes but the Buffaloes leave
 only one game and he had 70 RBI... The Japanese record of RBI in
 a game is 11 :-)  It is for the first time that one of three big
 batting titles is shared with three or more players]

[It was the retirement memorial game of 'the Giant 4th batter' Hara.
 He hit his final homerun (382nd homer in his career) in his final
 game.  His final act bat was at the 9th inning when the Carp sent
 Ohno for him.  Ohno pitched only fastballs and the last batting
 of Hara was a fly to left field.  After the game, his retirement
 celemony was held and he took off his uniform as a player forever]

[The first shutout game by Carp pitcher Yamazaki.  This game was
 the final game for Carp player Nishida, who appeared at the 8th
 as a pinch hitter and hit his final base hit to left.
 The number of Tighers' losses has become 84 which is now the
 new worst record in the history of the Tigers]

[The Swallows sent 9 pitchers in the game.  Each pitcher

 who allowed 3 hits, the preparation of Swallow pitchers

[Japan Series Game 1]

Oct. 21 at Kobe (night game)

The starters were Bross and Satoh both of whom
have achieved no-hitter this season.  But Satoh
seemed to be so bad that he had pinch in every innings.
The reason why he didn't allow many runs is that
Blue Wave fielders helped him many times.
It is true that the Swallows won 5-2 but it seems to me
that the Swallows should have won 8-1 or so.

[Top of 2nd]
Satoh allowed 4 base hits in a row after two outs, but
Ichiro threw out runner at home so the Swallows scored
only one.

[Top of 5th]
The Swallows had chance of runners on first and third
with one out.  Furuta hit a chopper on third base...
The Blue Wave third baseman Baba jumped to get it and
he threw to home and got the runner.  But Satoh allowed
Ikeyama a 2-run RBI hit after he gave up a walk.
 
[Top of 6th]
The Swallows had chance of a runner on second with one
out.  Arai hit a base hit to right field but the runner
held at third because Blue Wave right fielder Ichiro
threw the good ball to catcher though the batter advanced
to second.  Dobashi struck out after he failed suicide
squeeze and the Swallows couldn't score.

[Bottom of 6th]
Neel hit a RBI hit again when runners were on first and
second with two out.  The Blue Wave still had chance of
runners on first and third so they sent Fujii as a pinch
hitter.  But he couldn't get hit.

[Top of 8th]
Pinch hitter Ohno hit a inside fastball and the ball
went to left stand!  It was his first act bat in
Japan Series in his career.

Blue Wave starter Noda was good while Swallow starter
Ishii had quite bad control.  But Ishii's control
was too bad for batters to hit :-)  The Blue Wave
should have beaten the Swallows in early innings
but they couldn't.  Blue Wave batters swung high
balls and missed or hit pop flies.
Hirai, Blue Wave closer, seemed bad while Yamabe,
who was not very good in end of regular season,
seemed good.
Anyway the Blue Wave are not what they were in regular season.
OTOH, the Swallows go very well maybe because they have
studied about the Blue Wave players very well (what we
call 'ID-Yakyu').

The Game 3 is held on Oct. 24 at Jingu.

[Bottom of 1st]
Ichiro was hit by pitch on ball count 2 balls and 1 strike.
Fukura hit a grounder to first.  O'Malley made nice catch
to throw to second but the ball hit Ichiro's helmet (It
seemed to me that Ichiro ran so that he was on the line
of throwing to second).  Taguchi tried bunt on the first
pitch but the ball went in front of catcher and Swallows
turned double play.

[Bottom of 2nd]
D.J hit a breaking ball to right stand.

[Top of 5th]
After Hata's infield hit to second, Ikeyama hit a fly to
deep center.  The CF Motonishi got it at the wall with
stepping the wall.  Hata thought that it would be a long
hit so he couldn't return to first in time.

[Bottom of 5th]
Baba's hit and Nakajima's sacrifice bunt made chance of
a runner on second with one out.  Motonishi, who made
great catch on the top, hit a low line drive to right.
It seemed that the ball was in 'light' and RF almost
dropped it.  It was good that the second runner went to
third. He returned home with Ishii's wild pitch when the
batter was Ichiro.  Ishii was removed after he allowed
walks for Ichiro and Fukura.  But Taguchi struck out
from reliever Miyamoto.

[Top of 6th]
There was an accident that batted ball by Manaka hit
Noda's left leg.  But he continued to pitch after
a few minutes break.

[Top of 8th]
Meulens hit a blooper up the middle but it seemed
to me that 2B Fukura missed or misjudged the batted
ball (I mean that he should get it).  Dobashi hit
a clutch hit on ball count 3-2.  The Blue Wave sent
as relivers Nomura and Suzuki, not Hirai.  Nomura
was hit a RBI hit by O'Malley and the Swallows tied
the game.  Later Noda said that he would like to
get Dobashi out before 3-2 and he didn't like to face
to O'Malley.  I can't understand why the BlueWave
did't send Hirai.

[Bottom of 8th]
The lead-off of this inning Fukura hit almost the same
line drive to right as Motonishi hit at the 5th.  This
time RF Manaka missed the ball and it became a triple.
The following batters are 3, 4 and 5th but couldn't hit
even a SF.

O'Malley hit the game-winning homerun to left field.

The game was a contest of closers and Takatsu won.
The Swallows tied the game with Meulens' homerun and
won with Ikeyama's 3-run homerun.

[Top of 5th]
Ichiro appeared at the chance of runners on first and third
with 1 out.  He swung a low forkball and the ball went to
deep right... RF Hashigame made nice catch at the wall so
it was only a sacrifice fly.

[Bottom of 5th]
The Swallows sent Arai as a pinch hitter for Hashigami
who made the nice catch on the top after Meulens' single.
The Swallows tried hit and run (I think), but Arai missed..
The thrown ball to second made one-hop and 2B couldn't catch
it.  If he could catch it, then Meulen would be out.
After Arai's sacrifice bunt, pinch hitter Inaba hit a fly
to left ... it was not deep so I thought that Blue Wave
outfielder could get the runner even if the runner made
good jump... and the runner started to home... LF Taguchi
threw to home ... somehow 3B Baba relayed and Meulens scored.
I remembered old Japanese proverb "Muri ga tooreba douri hikkomu".

[Top of 7th]
Ogawa got a double to left-center field.  After the Blue Wave
sent Miwa as a pinch hitter the Swallows changed the pitcher
to Miyamoto.  Then the Blue Wave sent a new pinch hitter Neel
who hit a single to left.  The next batter Taguchi got a
low line drive to center and the Blue Wave tied.  But second
runner Neel, who over-ran second, injured one of his shoulders
and had to be removed.  After Fukura's sacrifice bunt and
an intentional walk for Ichiro, D.J hit a single to center
from pitcher Yamabe.  When the ball was sent to third,
third baseman Meulens juggled it so D.J tried to get second
but he was gotten.

The Swallows had chance of runners on first and second with
1 out.  Dobashi hit a grounder to third line but 3B Baba
made catch and got force out at third.  The Blue Wave sent
Nomura for O'Malley though Nomura allowed O'Malley a RBI hit
on Game 2.  His first pitch for O'Malley became a wild pitch,
which was also a blush back pitch, and after that he gave
O'Malley an intentional walk.  The pitcher was changed to
Hirai.  Furuta hit a grounder to the hole... Short stop
got it and threw to second... not in time and the Swallows
scored.  It might be a bad call (it is true that the covering
by 2B Fukura was a little late but it can be called both out
and safe, I think :-).  The Blue Wave manager, Ohgi, protested
against the 2B umpire very hard but of course the call wasn't
changed.

[Bottom of 9th]
Meulens hit a fastball down the middle to left stand on count 3-2
after he swung and missed two forkballs.

[Top of 10th]
The Blue Wave had chance of runners on first and second with 1 out.
Suguro hit a line drive to right line but RF was there in advance
and made easy catch.  Hirai also hit almost the same line drive.

[Bottom of 10th]
After O'Malley's walk, Furuta finally got a clean hit which was
a double to left.  Ikeyama swung a high fastball ... when he hit
it every one understood the win of the Swallows.

The Blue Wave got many hits but somehow they couldn't
hit any RBI hit.  Anyway this game was exciting, too.

* The Blue Wave had chance of bases loaded with two outs
  both in the first inning and in the second inning.
  In paticular, the case of the second inning, Ichiro
  appeared at the chance! (His result was a grounder
  to second baseman)

[Bottom of 5th]
Ikeyama walked, Meulen struck out.  After Kawasaki's
sacrifice bunt, Iida hit a line drive to second but
the ball hit the glove of 2b Fukura and Ikeyama scored.
This was the second hit for the Swallows.

[Top of 9th]
The lead-off batter of this inning Ogawa hit the 122nd pitch
of Kawasaki on ball count 1-0.  The ball went to left stand
near the left foul pole!  The next batter Neel, who was sent
as a pinch hitter, hit a base hit to center.  After sacrifice
bunt and Fukura's base hit to left, Ichiro appeared.  But
his result was just a line drive to short stop and the Blue
Wave couldn't take a lead.

[Bottom of 9th]
The lead-off batter of this inning Ohno, who was a pinch hitter,
got a single but the next batter Dobashi grouned out with the
first runner (double play) after he missed sacrifice bunt twice.
When O'Malley walked, the Blue Wave changed the pitcher to Noda.
Noda allowed Furuta a base hit but got strike out from Miyamoto.

[Top of 10th]
the Blue Wave had to sent a pinch hitter for Noda because they
had chance of runners on first and second with two outs.  But
pinch hitter Takada hit just a fly to center.

[Bottom of 11th]
After one outs, pinch hitter Arai walked and Dobashi hit a single.
The most exciting scene of this game had appeaered: the next batter
was O'Malley.  Blue Wave pitcher Kobayashi pitched very well and
O'Malley hit two homerun-like fouls.  At last O'Malley swang and
missed the 14th pitch on ball-count 3-2.

[Top of 12th]
D.J was the lead-off batter.  He hit a breaking ball and it became
a line drive to right stand.  Wind blew from outfield to backstop,
but there was no effect of the wind to the line drive.

[Bottom of 12th]
Meulens appeared on bases empty with two outs.  He hit a high
fly to deep left... The left fielder ran back and looked up
the ball at the wall... the ball went down and LF got it with
his back at the wall.  A little (?) strong wind might affect
the ball but anyway the Blue Wave won.

Players seemed to be tired after two hard extra-innings games.
The Blue Wave had to set Takahashi to the starting pitcher
and they had removed Hirai from the roster since yesterday.
OTOH, the Swallows had a excellent starter Bross and they didn't
make Takatsu pitch in yesterday's game so the point of this game
was whether the Blue Wave could beat Bross or not.

The Blue Wave went ahead with the homerun of Ichiro at the top of
the 1st inning. But in the bottom of the 2nd, Blue Wave fielders
made an error and a bad fielding to be turned the game.  The Blue
Wave had many chances, but they had hard luck.

This is the third time that the Swallows have become the Japan
champion and the last time was 1993.

[Top of 1st]
Ichiro finally swung and hit a high fastball and it had gone
to right stand (but it would not be a homerun at Kobe :-)

[Bottom of 2nd]
O'Malley hit a single to left field on ball count 3-2.
The next batter Furuta hit a easy grounder to first
but D.J couldn't catch it (An error was credited to him).
If he could have catch it, the Blue Wave would turn a double play.
Hata bunted between third baseman and pitcher... the bunt was
excellent as a sacrifice bunt but somehow it became a bunt hit
(I think that the pitcher should move more quickly or the third
baseman should field it because the Blue Wave went ahead at
this time!).  After that, Swallow batters got two sacrifice
flies and they turned the game.

[Top of 4th]
After two outs, the Blue Wave got a base hit and two walks.
It was unlucky for the Blue Wave because they had to send
a pinch hitter to pitcher Hoshino who faced only one batter
The pinch hitter counldn't get a hit.

[Bottom of 5th]
O'Malley hit a homerun to right on bases empty with two outs.
The ball he hit was a high fastball.  I think that the Blue
Wave only feared his homerun but anyway I think that the picher
Itoh should not pitch such a ball in such a situation because
his forkball is very good.

[Top of 7th]
After Miwa's base hit, pinch hitter Neel grounded out
to first with the runner.  As you know, in Japanese baseball
almost all managers think making tie at first.  I mean
that if they would have only one behind, then the manager
forced to bunt so they didn't send Neel and there were no
double play.  Unfortunately after the double play, Taguchi
hit a double to left field :-)

[Top of 8th]
After Ichiro's hit, D.J hit a line drive to first and
O'Malley got it.  The runner Ichiro couldn't return
but he was tagged out.  Again after the double play
Fujii hit a single to center :-)

[Top of 9th]
Takatsu pitched very well.  When the batter was Neel,
there was a happening:  The 6th(? I'm not sure) pitch
went to inside-low corner and Neel swung... and tipped
but the catcher couldn't catch.  But this play was
looked like struck out for outfiled fans so they threw
paper streams into the field.  After a few minutes break
Neel hit a grounder to second and the winning ball was
caught by O'Malley.  O'Malley said the he would keep it
as a memorial of this series :-)
