[**No-hit-no-run game by Nishizaki**
This is the first no-hit-no-run game in this season, and the 23rd in
Pacific League (the 22nd pitcher); the 72nd game (the 60th pitcher)
in all time including the games of 1 League. It is interesting that
recent 3 no-hit games in the Pacific Leauge are recorded by pitchers
of Fighters in every five years (by Tanaka in 1985, by Shibata in
1990; Remark that Kaku of Lions, who was a rookie at that time,
recorded a no-hit game 5 days earlier than Tanaka did). Nishizaki
got Jackson walked at two outs of the 1st inning, which was the only
runner he permited:
IP TBF H SO BB R pitches
Nishizaki 9 28 0 12 1 0 119
Nishizaki had almost the same situmation at the game against Lions
on Apr. 22. At that time, he didn't give any hit until no out of
the 8th inning, but he was hit a unlucky triple by Destrade. But
now Destrade has left Lions and even Kiyohara is out of the roster.
Lions have not been able to get any hit for recent 17 innings]

[At the top of 8th, Nagashima, the manager of Giants, sent Ishige
with 1 out and the runners on the first and second base, which is
the same situation on which he was hit a game-closing homerun yesterday.
Today, he pitched only fast balls (but one slider) and got flied outs.
Tigers need a good relief pitcher who pitchs when Tigers don't lead..
Come on (Ganbare), Nakanishi, Yuminaga! Tamura, come back!]

[It was the judgment which ended the game. At the top of 9th,
the Tigers had chance that the runner Hoshino, who was a pinch
runner for Glenn, was on the third base with 1 out. The batter
Yagi hit a fly to left field...The left fielder Hirosawa caught
and threw it to the catcher. The ball was high and the runner
slid so it seemed for Tigers fans to be safe but the judgment
was out. I'm not sure that the runner really touched the home plate,
but if he had touched the plate, then it should be safe, I think]

[The match of closers was won by Sasaki. If Giants had won, then
Matsui would have been the MVP :-) He hit a homerun at the top of 8th,
he showed nice fielding at the bottom of 9th. The Giants manager Nagashima
ordered Howell to do 'suicide squeeze', which ended foul, at the top of 9th
when the runners were on the first base and the third base with 1 out]

HR: G Mack 13, Matsui 16
B Braggs 12, Rose 14, Suzuki 7
[How exciting this game was ! At the bottom of 6th, the starter of
Giants Kawaguchi had pinch of bases loaded with 1 out. Kida relieved
Kawaguchi but he was hit a grand slum by Rose. Except for the homerun,
he seemed to pitch well. At the bottom of 9th, he was hit a single
by the top batter of this inning, but the next batter Tanishige hit a
grounder to Kida and Giants completed double play so the situation was
changed to no runners with two outs, 7-5 for Giants. Most people made
sure the win of the Giants, but after Ishii and Haru hit a single,
Suzuki hit the game-ending 3-runs homerun to slightly left of the back-
screen. I guess that Nagashima, the manager of the Giants, doesn't rely
on Ishige very much, fearing walks. The Giants should have had a reliable
closer such as Sasaki of BayStars :-)]

[News on July 17]
There are no games scheduled on July 17. But I have news. It have
passed just 6 months since Hanshin-Awaji earthquake disaster. In order
to help reconstruction, the Dream game, which is a charity game
between all Japanese and all foreigners, is going to be held at
Fukuoka Dome on July 24. The members list of the game was announced
today:

Valentine (Marines) Oh (Hawks)
Remark: There are no foreign players who have experience of catcher,
so Ohkubo has been selected because he has ever played in the US
educational league (Kyoiku ri-gu in Japanese). Johzume is a
catcher of the Marines which Valentine now manages.
The number of players in a team is 24 (and listed only 23
players). The final players are determined after both managers
consider about the rotation of pitchers or results of players.
Except for Japanese pitchers (and foreign catchers :-), both
teams are really Dream teams (it's a pity that McIntosh, who
can play as a catcher, isn't a member of Fighters).

[At the top of 12th, the BlueWave got the winning run
with 2 errors of the Lions; one was by 2B Tsuji and
the other was by 3B Ueda. You know but in the rule of
Pacific League, there are no extra innings more than 3
(at most 12 innings in a game) so it was really the final
clutch for the BlueWave and they did it. As a result,
the Magic number 43 would appear for the BlueWave if the BlueWave
would have won and the Marines would have lost tomorrow]

W: Gross(Fighters)

[It was a nice game. It's a pity that many good pitchers don't pitch
because of rotation (some pitchers, Birkbeck, Kakuri and so on, was
a starter of the game on the day before the dream game, and many
Japanese good pitchers are going to pitch in All-Star games on next
day or the day after the next day). But Hillman of the Marines, who
pitched 5 innings as a starter yesterday, pitched 2 innings and allow
no runs.
I should add about the 'Foreign' catchers. As I mentioned before,
Japanese players Johzume and Ohkubo were selected as the catchers.
Today, they are registered as 'foreign-like' name; Johzume was 'Joe',
whose pronouncation is the same as first half of his name, and Ohkubo
was 'Dave', which is his nickname and came from Japanese word 'Debu'
which means 'fat':-) Besides, Johzume prepared a uniform printed
'JOE' on the back.
Franco, whose number 21 is the same as Clement (sp?; killed by
air plane accident on the way to South America), ordered his new
glave in order to field in this game this May because he is a first
baseman in the Marines so he doesn't have other glave than first
baseman's mitt. He was the 4th batter and got 2 hits, single and
double, and also 2 runs]

[There was an interesting event just before the game. That is,
Higashio, the All-Pacific manager, pitched against the batter
Nagashima, the All-Central manager. Nagashima swung the 2nd pitch
to be a single to right field. The game was not bad, but it's too
bad to be a tie game :-)
I just comment about the variable players:
Ochiai: he hit a homerun at the bottom of 8th and saved Yabu to be lost:-)
Kiyohara: if Ochiai had not hit the homerun, Kiyohara would have been
the MVP. He got 2 RBI, one is at the top of the first, the
other is at the top of 8th. His second RBI hit was triple
to left field, but it was almost a homerun.
Braggs: He got 3 hits, one of which was almost a homerun. He was the
best batter in this game. If All Pacific had no or 1 run on
the 8th inning, he would be the MVP.
Ichiro: He got 2 hits and 2 runs. He also showed his strong arm and
good fielding, but he couldn't record any assists. He also
stole a base at the top of the 1st. Oh, I almost forgot.
He became the champion of the 'fastball-thrower' contest
held before the game. His fastest pitch recorded 144? 147? km/h
(about 90 or 92 mph)... sorry I'm not sure the digit.
Imanaka: The best pitcher in this game. He showed parfect pitching
in 3rd and 4th inning.]

and Pacific won:
Pacific 12 = 3(Tanaka)+ 5(Nakamura) +4(Ichiro)
Central 10 = 3(Nomura)+ 4(Etoh) +3(Matsui)
Matsui hit 3 for 5 and got not only game-winning RBI but also MVP.
It was the game of batting, so many batters had chance to be MVP :-)
At the top of 9th, Ichiro appeared the plate when the runner is on
the first base with 2 outs, 6-7 for Pacific. He swung and hit a fly
to deep center-right field. Many players and fans thought that it
would be a homerun, but somehow the ball went down and the right
fielder glaved it at the wall. Maybe Ichiro had been tired :-)
The second half will be opened on July 29.]
